Week 2 Lecture---Peter Hanley Art and Internet

Being Heard as an artist (being found)... artists should use social media (facebook, blogs, etc), online galleries, artist communities, and reproduction services to increase the chances of their work being discovered.

Social Media
  • art blogs (find blogs dealing with your field)
  • deviant art, flickr (places to post your work)
  • artist's blogs (a technical resource)

Online Presence

  • personal websites
  • galleries with a strong internet presence
  • online artist networks (inliquid.com)

Art Communities

  • online but make sure they are local
  • regional art organizations such as....CFEVA and Phila Photo Arts Center

Reproduction Services

  • Cafe Press (prints art on clothes)
  • Artist books.....lulu.com, blurb.com, iPhoto books
  • Print shops

Making Connections

Using social networks such as facebook, linkedlin, friendster, etc. make it easier to be discovered and to make connections. Blogs and twitter type cites and e-mail are also great resources when trying to connect with people.

Getting Paid (over the internet)

Etsy, spoonflower, and ponoko are websites where you can sell your work. Creating your own personal website is also something to consider.

Making art (internet as a medium)

Networking and digital art are tools for artists. Personas can be used to build a graph that analyzes yourself as an artist. The Adobe suite, Max/MSP Jitter, Pd are all places were art can be made on your computer as are virtual enviroments such as hacking video games, second life, etc.

Mr. Hanley's lecture ended here with him running out of time. He had a useful list of links that we didn't get to discuss but the list should be emailed to all students in the near future.
